ACDS is a unique educational concept in New York State that serves children and adults with Down Syndrome, autism, and other developmental disabilities. When an existing sprinkler system broke down at its Plainview location, the administration saw an opportunity to transform the space with an interactive play area.
A Splashpad® was deemed the perfect solution, viewing it as an asset to the children in their daily curriculum. It was also a chance to add value – and fun – to the school’s summer program.
Sal Romanello from PlaySafe Recreation & Aquatic Design, Inc. collaborated with Vortex and ACDS with a mandate to design a Splashpad® that was engaging, inclusive, and interactive. A beach theme was requested, so aquatic play features like Fish No1, Dolphin, and Hop Starfish were selected. Beyond aesthetics, each feature was chosen for its specific interactive and tactile capabilities to best meet the learning and development needs of the children.

« The Splash Pad is AMAZING!!! It’s just the right size and the elements are perfect. What an improvement it is over our previous summer water play options. [The other day] one of the little boys stopped in the middle of the Splash Pad and yelled to no one in particular, ‘This is the best day ever!’ »
« It’s sometimes the smallest projects that create the biggest smiles. »
